When I was about 9, I told a major fib involving my parents' money. I felt guilty about it afterwards and wanted to confess, but never mustered up the courage, although I tried.

I remember lying in my bed at night full of guilt vowing that I would confess tomorrow at breakfast. But tomorrow always came and I never confessed.

This is the flip side of the "effectiveness" of spankings as discipline for children. They can make children hide things they would otherwise confess to, and suffer longlasting guilt about them.
