Originally this was a Broadway play, and the same little girl played "Rhoda" as she later did in the movie. When each play concluded, mother and daughter actresses came back on stage with a chair. The mother actress seated herself and gave her daughter actress a realistic-looking stage spanking across her lap with "Rhoda" behaving like her bottom really hurt. Meanwhile their audience applauded and cheered.

With the movie version they retained her spanking scene. The little actress who played Rhoda very convincingly behaved like a little girl getting a real spanking from her mother. She, after all, had had plenty of practice by that time from her live plays. And since this was the 1950's she was almost certainly spanked for real on occasion when home with her real parents.
