Both my mom and my dad spanked me and always bare bottom. My dad used a paddle. He would brandish it where I could see it and tell me to pull down my own pants and underpants then bend over the couch arm. When it was over and I finished crying I had to pull my pants back up myself.

Up until age 13 my mom used her hand and she took my pants down herself. Then at 13 both parents switched to the strap and mom started brandishing the strap where I could see it and anticipate what was coming then tell me to "Get those pants down - all the way!" by myself and bend over the couch arm. Boy that strap stung!

I am pretty sure the intent of giving it bare was to increase the sting and not to embarrass. When mom pulled my pants down herself she would lower my trousers to the floor then tell me to turn around and face the couch before she pulled down my underpants so that my front was never on overt display. My dad had me face the couch and take down both trousers and underpants. Of course, when it was over I'd jump up, rub my burning buns and do the spankey dance without any consideration to what was bouncing up and down in full view, but that was up to me. Embarrassment was never a major factor.
