While this is unusual for the South, the school district where I attended School voted corporal punishment out fifteen years ago. My kids go to the same Schools I went to. But they never got paddled at School. However, We got a new Superintendent this year, and he was pushing to bring back the paddle. It would take a majority vote of our five member School Board to bring it back. The Board called a public meeting to discuss it and asked for members of the community to speak and voice their opinions and guess who one of the first people to give their opinion was? Yours truly. I let them know I was dead set against bringing back Corporal Punishment and why. I went into the details about the paddling I got in Seventh Grade from the Assistant Principal. How badly bruised I was, the blood blisters I had from the holes in the paddle he used on me and the fact I couldn't even go to the bathroom without help for a few days because I literally couldn't sit on the toilet. Then I shared the story Gary Steven posted about the teacher he had who liked to paddle and bully kids and how he ended up rebreaking an injured students leg while he was in a cast. Which got him fired. They were pretty shocked, then other former students talked, mainly about that former Assistant Principal.

I talked to three of the Board Members that I knew, and they each told me they were voting no on bringing the paddle back. The other two hadn't said anything about how they would vote. But I ran into one of them and it turned out I had met her before. She graduated two years after I did. She was one of the girls I heard getting paddled by the Girl's Gym Coach when I went to talk to the Coach about scheduling a make up Health test. She and the other girl were both wrapped in towels. and even though I was waiting in the Coach's office I could hear everything and it sounded like she paddled them bare. She told me that's exactly what happened and if she had anything to say about it, she was going to vote no about bringing back the paddle.

They had a private meeting with the Superintendent yesterday instead of waiting until next month and they gave him their decision. All five voted no.

Gary, I'm sorry that I used your story when presenting my case to the School Board, but I'd hoped you wouldn't mind.
