That is a really sweet story.

I got paddled for talking in class and once for an epic ruler/sword fight while the teacher was out of the room (until she came back. They called it getting "swats."

Some of the principals could singe your rump pretty good but it was usually not too bad. There was one science teacher who took pride in her swats (and I think she enjoyed it too). She bragged that no boy made it past 4 swats with dry eyes and she was right as far as I could tell. None of the principals gave more than 6 but she started at 7! I don't think there was a formal limit in high school and she took advantage of that. I got paddled for horseplay during labs (admittedly something dangerous) and never tested her again.

I think swats worked when I was in school, especially because parents supported it, but I doubt they would work today
