By the time my mother got into the room, I would have promised to join holy orders and be celibate for the rest of my life to avoid what was coming. There was one time I was able to convince my mother that I didn't really understand what I had done and she decided not to go through with it. She was a reasonable person and didn't really want to blister my backside if she didn't need to. On the other hand, she wasn't stupid and, she felt that she had to follow through so that warnings and rules would be taken seriously.
