Growing up in the South in the 50s and 60s we were expected to address adults - our elders and betters - as Sir and Ma'am! Failure to do so would not automatically result in a spanking but would earn a verbal reprimand. Persistant 'disrespect', after many warnings might well lead to a spanking. With my parents, aunts's and uncles under normal circumstances more informal terms of address were allowed, Mom, Dad, Uncle Bill, Auntie Peggy, etc... But if we were in trouble with any of them then it was definitely Sir, Ma'am!
