Yes, this was in the US during the early '50s. Spanking was pretty much the go-to punishment for all kinds of misbehavior both at school and at home. At home I got the strap from age 10 up. I usually got 1 swat per year of age, maybe twice that many if I has done something really bad. All my buddies got the strap, too, always on our bare bottoms. It was just the way it was. We all cried up a storm even when we got it in front of each other and nobody teased anyone because we all knew how much it hurt.
