I was born in the early 70s and recall getting spankings through my pre-teen years until about grade seven in school (so around 13 years old, which would have been 1984. Almost every other boy I knew would brag from time to time, and share details about a recent spanking (and if course how vravely they took it, which I knew was inaccurate). Boys being boys, there probably was some exaggeration. Nevertheless, it was something I noted that among maybe 10 or so other boys, descriptions of spankings were quite variable, and the parents' implements of choice more so. Bare or not, or in front of siblings was also variable. It was most common to hear of spankings with folded up belts, though theee were a couple other boys who, like me, got it with a paddle, or (when younger) with a wood spoon. I actually saw one neighborhood kid get it with a switch/cane several times. That kid's parents were immigrants and if they caught us kids doing something bad together they sometimes chased us all with the switch. They never switched anyone but their own kid, but the chase usually would end when they caught catch their boy. The rest of us would stop and either watch laughing (though nervously) as he got six or seven good licks with the switch and he howled bloody murder. I also recall a few times (maybe a half dizen) riding my bike or otherwise being out in my neighborhood and overhearing the unmistakable sounds of a spanking, coming from an open bedroom window. I always felt pretty lucky I was hand spanked or (after age seven) paddled rather than getting the belt or (thank God) a switch. Before I started getting the paddle around age seven, i was always spanked bare butt. From then until age nine, the likelihood of a bare butt spanking with the paddle was 50-50, from age nine through twelve though my mom and dad decided all paddlings would be on my bare butt. Finally, I also felt lucky, my parents firmly believed spankings should be private, at least behind my closed bedroom door.

I also vaguely recall seeing TV talk shows even into the 1990s (when I was in, or finished with college) where spanking was a topic. By about 1994 or 1995 I had become interested in spanking due to a young woman I was dating being into it and discussing it. Back then, the format of these shows was for hosts like Oprah and Phill Donahue to have a two or three "expert" panel who would tell their opinions on a topic. The host wouod then walk around with a microphone to take questions for the experts from the studio audience. Again, vaguely, I recall for the spanking topic, the "experts" were usually stacked so that most or two of three of the guests were anti-spanking. What sticks out though was that most of the studio audience still seemed (based on expressions of disagreement with the anti-spanking experts) very pro spanking, even into the 90s.

My sense is spanking, even doing so "the good old fashioned way," by parents is still fairly common even today. But where society has changed the most in the past 30 years is openly discussing it, and it's definitely taboo to advocate in favor of it.
