I never got the cane or the switch but I knew kids who received whuppings with the switch and they assured me that the biting, burning sting a switch could impart as it wrapped itself aroung your buttocks and legs had to be felt to be fully appreciated! Also the marks from a switching after it had sunk itself into your buttock and leg flesh could take weeks to fully disappear! I saw one switching, when we went on holiday down South and that was enough to convince me why The Switch is such a dreaded implement! The two switchings I heard other kids get also brought home to me just how awful a punishment a whupping with a switch must be! The screams and howling were something else almost other worldly!
