I know the feeling! Usually talking back or sassing would not merit a spanking (maybe a slap) BUT... if my mom was in a bad mood that day, I would find myself with a very sore bottom.

I remember more than once arguing, talking back or being sarcastic and then suddenly finding myself on her lap, bawling and getting my backside tanned.
