My mother swore by the brush. The rare times my father spanked me, with no enthusiasm I might add, it was, stating after my thirteenth birthday, with the belt.

Which was, in my humble opinion, the lesser of the two evils. By far!

I don't want to say any wimp can take the belt, but only a 'man' can endure wood (the brush). But had you asked me for my opinion as a teenager, there it is.

Then again, it could be said my mother was an enthusiastic spanker, whereas the rare times my dad spanked, it was because he felt he had to. It was what a man did, back then.
