Where I grew up in the 60s, principals and VPs at school could spank or paddle a student, and they did not need permission from your parent to do it. Other adults had no such permission, and could get into serious trouble with the parents or the law if they spanked us. Contrary to some belief, in the 50s and 60s, Dr Spock was becoming a big influence, and many parents were following his advice on liberal parenting. There were many parents who did not believe in spanking. If you got in trouble with an adult outside the family, they would tell your parents, and it would be handled at home. My parents still believed very strongly in spanking.

There were a few times in my childhood and adolescence where I got in trouble with an adult in the neighborhood, and I was pleading with them not to tell my parents.
