My biological momma died when I was just 6. For a year or so afterwards we were looked after by my Daddy's sister Barbara Jo. Daddy was a truck driver and was away from home a lot of the time. A few months after Momma's death my father met Carrie and their relationship really blossomed. She moved into our house around about thirteen months after my Mom had died and married three months later.

The relationship worked well in a number of ways. Carrie cooked, cleaned and looked after us kids. Whilst Daddy provided her with the financial security she needed! She was incidentally much younger than him. Carrie was twenty two when they married. Whilst Daddy was thirty nine. He also, I believe, made her feel more emotionally secure and she looked upon him as a father-like figure. She even often addressed him as Sir! Carrie had spent her childhood and teenage years in children's homes and foster families. Most of which had not been a happy or pleasant time for her. My father would even threaten her, in a mostly playful and fun way, with a whuppin' or spankin' if she committed a little 'misdemeanor' or 'answered him back'! Spanking actually became part of their sex life! But the love they felt for each other was genuine!

To be fair to Carrie when she came to live with us she took on one hell of a lot! Five kids was a real handful! She took good care of us and could be kind and loving. But she could also be cold and distant. And she was very strict! More so than from what I remember of my biological Mom. My siblings also confirmed that Carries discipline was on a different level, as well. I think the main reason for this was that step parents often felt they had to establish their authority in the new home in which they had moved into. Sensing and suspecting that there was and would be resentment, whether open or concealed, they needed to, whilst accepting that they could never fully replace the dead or absent biological parent, make it clear to their step kids that they were their new parent and that they expected to be shown the appropriate level of respect that this postion entilted them to! In Carrie's case this was further made more difficult by her age. At twenty two she was barely seven years older than my oldest sister Betty Sue. Being so young made her new role as a step mother an even more challenging one than it might have been if she had been older. I think this whole new domestic situation and the tensions it caused, carried over into the spankings she gave us! The tannings she gave our tushies really brought home to us just who was the 'Queen Bee' in this house now! They were much longer, harder and more humiliating than the ones we had got from our biological mother and were more formal and ritualised punishments as well! Even Betty Sue quickly realised that Step Momma Carrie was not to be messed with!
