I can't recall my parents earing me, but I almost got one torn off by a teacher in the 4th grade. Cement contractors were laying out a new walkway to the bike parking area so we could get there without tramping through the mud. Get this: they were laying out wet concrete at a grammar school in session! What were they thinking?? I was just unlucky enough to be among the first to be caught scratching my name in the wet cement with a rusty nail wedged out of the wood framework. Boy, talk about leaving evidence of a crime - my name set in concrete - I wasn't a very competent 4th grader. Well, we were caught in the act and I had the misfortune to get taken in tow by Mrs. Battleaxe, known for her... how can I put it?... no nonsense approach. She grabbed me by my left ear and dragged me away from the scene of the crime doing her best to pull my ear off in the process. I fully expected to get the strap in the principal's office, but a miracle happened: I didn't get sent to the principal's office nor, if you can believe it, did a note get sent home. My parents never found out. I have no explanation for that lapse in school discipline and sure wasn't about to ask!!! One of my luckier days.
