I'm quite sure I had some spankings at a younger age, but the first one I recall fairly clearly was probably around age five or six. I was caught by my dad walking around in a flower bed that was off limits, I think because I had previously stepped on some plants there.

Part of why I recall it was that I was literally swept off my feet and carried to my bedroom. In later spankings I was verbally sent to my bedroom first. After putting me down on my bed, my dad left for a few minutes, and came back with one of those lightweight paint-stirring paddles that you can get for free at a hardware store. It was the first time I recall being spanked with some kind of tool/implement.

Just as importantly, I also recall he was still a bit angry when he sat on my desk chair, and lectured me about already knowing I was not to go into the flower bed. Then I was told "pull down your pants and bend over."

Once over his knees, my dad rarely said anything else, and simply let the spanking communicate. But that time he was still clearly angry, and I remember him saying "Young man, I am going to spank you until your butt is RED!" I had very little time before he made good on that statement, but that was the first reference I had to make me think that maybe spanking had some visual side effects besides the sensation if sting.

I'm sure that little paint stick didn't do any real damage besides making a small boys butt red. I do recall however, its sting was different, and much more memorable than spankings with his hand (that were still the main way he did it for another year or two).
