Sean, your childhood, from what you tell, was absolutely normal, in fact it was a wonderful childhood, IMHO.
I think this friendship between you and the girl your age and her younger brother was wonderful.
It's a good thing you played naked without false modesty when it was hot.
My sons also go naked on the beach, but only on public, unspoiled, and uncrowded beaches. They're not nudist beaches—my husband and I aren't—but they're free and somewhat secluded. I see that my children play much more happily when they're naked.
However, when we go to crowded beaches, close to cities, with umbrellas and lounge chairs, I make them wear swimsuits. Italy is a somewhat bigoted country, and I don't want to get into trouble with people calling the police for indecent exposure. They would be comfortable on these beaches too, my youngest son often asks me if he can take off his swimsuit, but I prefer not to.
