All aboard for a voyage back to the Fourth Century BC.
We see Alexander the Great, who is diligently conquering India.
He meets a group of men, known as the Naga Sadhu, who renounce all worldly possessions.
That means renouncing any clothes, so the men remain naked.

Alexander mocks the men for not amassing material things.
The naked men, in turn, mock Alexander for amassing possessions which he could enjoy for only a short while.

Alexander leaves India.
He tells his fellow countrymen of the Naga Sadhu, who become known as the Gymnosophists in Greece.
Alexander dies three years later, after which his empire rapidly crumbles.

We shall stay in India, but we fast forward to the winter of 2025.
We visit the city of Prayagraj in the province of Uttar Pradesh.
A 44-day festival, known as the Kumbh Mela, is in full operation.
This celebration takes place once every 12 years, because that is approximately how long it takes for the planet Jupiter to make a full revolution.
And if that is not enough, this was a Mahakumbh Mela, which takes place once every 144 years.

Of course, our trip was only imaginary.
But the Youtube site has made imagination easier for us. There, we find that the Naga Sadhu/Gymnosophist cult is still going strong, and we see exhibitors here who are well aware of that fact.
They are competing very successfully with the countless other attractions by introducing us to the youngest members of the cult, who range from 8 years old.

We notice that millions of people are dressed snugly in sweaters and jackets, while our honored guests were dressed only in a layer of epidermis.

Some of the exhibitors claimed to host the youngest of these honorees.
We don’t know who that would be, but it would have to be the 8-year-old with the most recent birthday.

----feelings regarding their own nudity-----

At the locale in which the celebration took place, the temperature ranged from 12 degrees Centigrade (54 degrees Fahrenheit) to 29 degrees Centigrade (82 degrees Fahrenheit). The journalists had good reason, then, to ask about the physical comfort of their sartorially deprived subjects.
The boys responded that they did not feel any discomfort (ABP Ganga 2025, Apni Varta 2025, Er Amit Pandit Tv Katihar 2025, Mero Vrindavan 2025).

Some of the children were covered with ashes, which might have provided adequate protection.
All of the children had been in the group for several years, so their metabolism might have adjusted accordingly.
Perhaps the children were receiving Divine protection from the cold, as their religious sympathizers might have us believe.
Or perhaps the children were in fact uncomfortable but taught not to complain.
Your guess is as good as mine.

Now for the question of modesty:
One could argue that their years of nudity have rendered them immune to any feelings of self-consciousness.
However, none of the children had ever been surrounded by so many millions of heavily bundled people, and could find this experience shocking.
So the answer could be either yes or no.
Surprisingly, only one interviewer asked this question.
8-year-old Gopal Giri (Dham Ki Yatra 2025) replied, “I don’t feel ashamed.”

I think the child was telling the truth.
There were a few lapses in the censorship of the videos, and none of them showed any erections.

----celebrity status----

There was a crowd of people gathering to see our little saints (ABP Ganga 2025, Astro Tak 2025, Dham Ki Yatra 2025). Cameras were flashing all day long.

Our budding guru’s had to give back-to-back interviewers.
The interviewer for 8-year-old Maharaj Ji (Er Amit Pandit Live Tv Katihar 2025) had to wait for an hour.

The excitement was not confined to the festival itself. Rather, the news spread all over country, all over social media (Er Amit Pandit Live Tv Katihar 2025).

Undoubtedly, many of the festival-goers were merely seeking shocking tabloid news.
But many others had genuine religious reasons.
Some were asking for a blessing (Amar Ujala Uttar Pradesh 2025, Bhagwa News Network 2025).
In one video (Astro Tak 2025), 8-year-old Aansoo Giri Ji is shown blessing an interviewer by touching him with a peacock feather.

Some attendees asked for even less than a tickle from a feather.
Since a mere sight of a holy person, or a “darshan,” is believed to hold spiritual value, some attendees came seeking darshan’s (Apni Varta 2025, Astro Tak 2025, TV9 Bharatvarsh 2025).

Did all this excitement exhaust our darling wunderkinder?
8-year-old Maharaj Gopal (ABP Ganga 2025) and 8-year-old Maharaj Ji (Er Amit Pandit Live Tv Katihar 2025) assured their hosts that it did not.

----living conditions----

Some of the children were asked about their living conditions.
8-year-old Aansoo Giri Ji lived in a hut in the forest (Astro Tak 2025).
8-year-old Maharaj Ji lived in a hermitage with 10 or 15 other people.
After growing older, he was expected to live in a cave or a jungle (Er Amit Pandit Tv Katihar 2025).
Gopal shared a cremation ground with his spiritual brothers (Bhagwa News Network 2025).

4:00 AM seemed to be the usual time for reveille (Amar Ujala Uttar Pradesh 2925, Apni Varta 2025, Astro Tak 2025, Mero Vrindan 2025).
This could be followed by a ceremonious bath (NDTV India 2025).
On the whole, each day was spent in prayer and devotion (NDTV India 2025).

Most of the leaders in the monasteries recognized the educational needs of these young lads.
Subjects taught included Hindi (Amar Ujala Uttar Pradesh 2025, Astro Tak 2025), Sanskrit (Astro Tak 2025, Bhagwa News Network 2025, Hakikat Sabtak News 2025), English (Astro Tak 2025), and computers (Astro Tak 2025).

In at least one case, school attendance was not mandatory.
8-year-old Maharaj Gopal used to attend school, but preferred the spirituality of the monastery (ABP Ganga 2025).

Many of our juvenile subjects attend schools operated by guru’s (Astro Tak 2025, Bhagwa News Network 2025, Mero Vrindavan 2025).

However, at least two of our little boys had attended school in the outside world.
This made it necessary for the boys to wear clothes (Mero Vrindavan 2025, Principle of News 2025).
Doesn’t that ruin your whole day?

----feelings about the outside world----

All of the interviewed children were longtime veterans in the monastic life.
8-year-old Giriraj Puri joined at the age of 5 (Mero Vrindavan 2025). 12-year-old Bal Yogi Maharaj Ji (Apni Varta 2025), 8-year-old Gopal Giri Ji (NDTV India 2025) and 12-yr Maharaj Ji (Principle of News 2025) joined the monastery 4 years prior.

The record is held by Shivani Giri Mata Ji.
12 years earlier, he was abandoned by his parents at the same festival at the age of 3.
He was now attending the festival as a 15-year-old (Hakikat Sabtak News 2025).

8-year-old Giriraj Puri preferred his monastic life to the outside world because his adult protectors responded more patiently to children’s misbehavior (Amar Ujala Uttar Pradesh 2025).

Our precocious little devotees showed little sign of homesickness (Amar Ujala Uttar Pradesh 2025, Bhagwa News Network 2025, Mero Vrindavan 2025).
8-year-old Maharaj Ji (Er Amit Pandit Tv Katihar 2025) did not even remember his parents’ names.
As a result of his early abandonment, Shivani Giri Mata Ji did not know who his parents are, and would not want to reunite with them even if he found out (Hakikat Sabtak News 2025).

A couple of the little fellows had little memory, and therefore no attraction, to their families.
12-year-old Maharaj Ji does not remember his mother because she died from childbirth (Principle of News 2025).

Unlike most of his other prodigies, 8-year-old Gopal Giri Ji had thoughts which sometimes wander homeward (NDTV India 2025).
Although he was “completely satisfied in the world of saints,” he has not severed all ties with his family.
He received occasional visits from his mother, and freely admits, “I miss my family.”

By and large, our youthful prodigies seemed to be quite content with their unusual lifestyle (ABP Ganga 2025, Hakikat Sabtak News 2025, Principle of News 2025).
8-year-old Maharaj Gopal was resigned to a childhood without toys (ABP Ganga 2025).
12-year-old Maharaj Ji (Principle of News 2025) had no interest in movies.
Nor did he have any interest in music in the outside world, preferring the hymn-singing in the monastery (Principle of News 2025).
8-year-old Giriraj Puri preferred the company of his fellow celibates over that of his peers in the outside world (Mero Vrindavan 2025).

However, the children made occasional recognition to the outside world.
8-year-old Gopal Giri Ji (NDTV India 2025) occasionally took part in sports.
8-year-old Gopal Giri played “gilli danda,” a game with two sticks (Dham Ki Yatra 2025).
8-year-old Maharaj Ji played a board game called “ludo” (Er Amit Pandit Live Tv Katihar 2025).

What were their dreams for the future?
12-year-old Bal Yogi Maharaj Ji said that he might get a job and get married someday (Apni Varta 2025).
8-year-old Gopal Giri Ji (NDTV India 2025) and 12-year-old Maharaj Ji (Principle of News 2025), however, were resigned to lifelong seclusion.

----viewer comments----

A wide variety of opinions, both positive and negative, and from both India and from around the world, appeared in the comment columns.
A few viewers suspected that the children were being sexually abused by the adults in the cult.
Other viewers believed that children were making decisions which only adults should make, such as “. . . whether to become a monk or not.” (NDTV India 2025)

In the comment column for TV9 Bharatvarsh (2025), there was disagreement on whether or not the children’s educational needs were being met.
One viewer reminded us that “Both learning and math are essential.”
Another viewer countered that Naga sadhus are religious and progressive.
They give importance to education which is a very good thought and makes them responsible citizens.”

Some viewers disapproved of the cult’s mendicancy.
An NDTV India (2025) viewer asked, “What will happen if everyone becomes a saint?”

Some viewers regarded the whole deal as a rip-off.
A comment for Bhagwa News Network (2025) read, “All the kid is doing is scamming people out of their money. And he ain’t no saint for real people. Get real. And get a life.”

The comely young lads received some admiration from some of the viewers.
(“Indians are a handsome people.” (Amar Ujala Uttar Pradesh 2025))
(“Beautiful boys!” (Apni Varta 2025))
(“Wow, so cute!” (Apni Varta 2025))

To different viewers, different children seemed to express different emotions.
An NDTV India (2025) viewer wrote, “The child is crying. He's just holding back tears. This means no one should leave home at this age. This is the age when the mind and intellect are developing.”
However, a Dham Ki Yatra (2025) viewer wrote, “Look at his confidence . . wonderful!”

There was not as much opposition to the boys’ nudity as I had expected.
An exception was an Arabic speaker calling himself The Truth, who asked NDTV India (2025), “Can anyone tell me what you do, what your religious customs are and why the child is without clothes?”

Out of all the viewer comments, my favorite was the one submitted by cindy1010us.
She saw the Dharm Ki Yatra (2025) video, which was not as carefully censored as most of the others.
“When I first saw this boy, by the way he talked with such pride and confidence, he seemed to be a grown kid, but when I saw his lullie at 11:52 he proved he is just a little boy.”

In these unfortunate times of T-shirts in 90-degree weather, children’s shorts which fit like tents, and towel dances in the locker room, I now have a glimmer of hope for humanity.
I would like for all members of the nurturing gender to see all boys in their natural state, to comment unabashedly on their “lullie’s” and all their other body parts, and to respond with similar admiration and respect.

At this point, I wish to express one major disappointment: after being promised that the children would appear nude, I was sorry to see the children wearing hats, turbans, and necklaces.
My idea of nudity is wearing absolutely nothing, not even for adornment.
