To save on laundry, we few boys around me often naked in summer were asked to stay naked all summer unless we were actively doing chores. It meant that for three months straight, seeing local boys running around with their penises out was just a mundane fact of the season. Seems crazy today though

This created a real double standard on our daily trek to the "Blue Eye," our secret, two-acre spring-fed quarry. Me and Cassie’s younger brother walked the dirt road wearing nothing but old, second-hand Keds to protect our feet from the gravel. Right next to us, Cassie walked along in a heavy t-shirt and cut-offs, sweaty in the heat while we stayed cool.

When we reached the massive granite ledge, Cassie would finally strip off her gear and dive in with us. We’d swim out to the dilapidated dock floating in the center to dry off, surrounded by spruce trees, just enjoying the silence.

On the way back, neighbors in pickups often offered us a lift. We’d hop into the bed completely naked except for our sneakers, sitting right next to Cassie. The driver wouldn't even blink. It was just seen as fine back then—especially since we were pre-puberty—just tired kids getting a ride home.

I’m curious if anyone else here remembers a "laundry rule" like that, or was my island just an outlier? Mom mom would even run errands with me like that!

Hmm I like this topic on quiet snow storm and came up with simple list of funny thiongs I would see long time ago, mostly around outdoors. None are overly done but all together made my youth time period very unique.

* Parents followed advice from famous columnists like Ann Landers, who said that letting kids be bare satisfied their curiosity and made them more confident. Moms loved the "bare summer" because it meant they didn't have to wash mountains of salty, sandy, or stained clothes every single day.

* If the 6-, 8-, and 15-year-old boys were playing bare, the girls felt totally comfortable doing the same. Being the only clothed person in a "bare pack" would have actually made a girl feel more "exposed" and out of place.

* Kids got a pass riding to lake nude. Groups of kids rode their "banana seat" bikes five miles to the lake. They went slow to stay cool and used the breeze to dry off their skin. They draped towel often for the heat.

* Girls around age 12 usually wore an oversized T-shirt with nothing underneath for riding bikes or transistion from beach to car often. Girsl often owned one nylon one piece suit she needed for public pools but boy did not.

* Many boys went nude at beach by default, but mom would dictate if girl could too. The logic was that if everyone was in the same state, nudity became boring and no one felt self-conscious.

* In the beach washroom, the sister or mother would often have to help the younger boys use the urinal before the long ride home. She would casually help the 6- or 8-year-old aim properly to make sure he didn't splash his legs or the floor.
