Nude babies and small children are not considered sexual in nature, but depictions of adults and teenagers close to adulthood often convey sexual and romantic connotations.

At what age does this association begin? Does body hair play a role? Is it different for boys and girls?

Jack Wilson (2018, Voy 223876) presents a three-stage theory. In upper elementary school, he performed in nude swim class at the YMCA.

In junior high school, he and his teammates “began to realize there was something sexual about swimming naked and that the girls all enjoyed seeing us.”

In high school, Jack and many others “actually enjoyed ‘showing off’ to the girls.” For other swimmers, it was embarrassing.
