In fact, having my naked son sit on my lap like on a horse, with his legs spread, his face turned outward so everyone could see his private parts clearly is very "extreme" for me. Especially in a small space like a cable aerial tramay. It's very different on a lounge chair on the beach... I'm not sure I'd do it… I asked my children: Francesco replied that it would be too embarrassing, Tommaso said he would do what his mother told him, so OK even if he would have preferred to keep his legs closed.
But either she's very proud of her son and wanted to show him off to everyone (as scamptoo suggests) or she wanted to "desensitize" her son with this "shock therapy" so that he would always be comfortable in every situation and never feel ashamed. Or both... Who knows... it would be interesting to know...

Well, I don't know the exact reason but she told me he has always been sitting like that when on her knees. Maybe he likes the breeze. Would I do that? Probably not. I would probaby want to have a child's side facing me and his legs sqeezed.

That's exactly what I think... I'd also have him sit like you said (side facing me and his legs squeezed). But I'm a little envious of the freedom of that mother and son, who don't care what people think and aren't embarrassed. If you hear from your German friend, tell her I partly envy her and how comfortable her son is in that situation.

It never occurred to me that maybe that mother wanted to "desensitize" her son with this "shock therapy" ?
