 I was a child in the 1950s and those paddles were very common in wayside stores. But we lived in a big city and a children's clothing store was nearby. Near the back of the store was a display case with accessories. one shelf was serious spanking implements. rear paddles, straps, tawses and martinets. I tried hard to steer mom away from that part of the store.
