Dad,

My parents had a paddle and Mom's hairbrush. The paddle was not a school type paddle like yours, but it was long, sturdy and struck both cheeks.

Mom did not care for the paddle because it had a humorous saying on it (was a gift from my aunt and uncle) and Mom vocally did not think humor should be mixed with discipline. Too bad for us kids. We all thought Mom's hairbrush (spanks on alternating cheek) was worse than the paddle despite Dad's strength.
