Subject: WHAT IS A JASPER????????

We've all been asking that question for years. Here is the answer. Brother Jasper brought baseball to MC back in the 1880's and was its first coach. During a warm, humid day while playing the semi-pro team, the Metropolitans, he noticed that the fans and players were restless and edgy going into the 7th inning. He had them stand up and stretch before the inning began. Since MC played the NY Giants in the Polo Grounds during the 1880's and 1890's, this practice of the 7th inning stretch was adopted by the majors. He is recognized in the Hall of Fame. Neat!

Story I heard was when Brother Jasper brought his team to games, people would refer to them as Brother Jasper's boys. That was eventually shortened to the Jaspers.

Another interesting fact about a MAAC school name/mascot:
The Stags nickname was coined in reference to the large deer population in the Fairfield area and not after the extensive film/magazine collection of our beloved message board moderator
