In reply to: NUSuperfan 's message, "Evansville In NIT After Losing Season" on Saturday, March 23, 01:01:38am

They are in the CBI which is a tourney that has always invited teams that had losing records and that you have to pay a fee to get “invited” to. A number of teams in the WNIT have losing records - Cincinnati and Providence (who got a bye despite being 13-20) as well as a number of others. The women have a new NCAA sponsored tourney - the 32 team WBI which corresponds to the NIT and gets the first teams left out while the CBI and WNIT are privately run and get the secondary teams. Add that this year there were 17 teams who declined the men’s NIT, 68 teams in the NCAA, 32 teams in the NIT and who knows how many don’t want to pay $30,000 to play in the CBI and you get down to Evansville I guess. Do Evansville and Providence put up banners?

CBI has 5 out of 15 teams (couldn’t find a 16th) with losing records: Chicago State, Presbyterian, Delaware St, Bethune-Cookman, and Evansville. Sad because there are a few really good teams in the field. With 17 teams declining the NIT, time to rethink these tournaments and just have one alternative for both men and women taking the best teams available as long as they have a winning record.

Funny that you should mention banners - it reminds me of when Oregon State won the CBI Tourney in 2009 under Coach Craig Robinson. They actually had a tough road to capture it - they had to upset a good UTEP team on the road in the final game of the best of three.

OSU did raise a banner, but after a few years - with the CBI being increasingly maligned for fielding inferior teams willing to pay to play, the athletic department (wisely) took it down.
