Talk about blowing something way out of proportion! If I was AD, I would have handled things exactly the way Joe Manhertz did. After their semi final loss, Schmidt indicated We would welcome an unlikely NIT bid. After exit interviews however it was determined four players including Chad Venning were entering the portal. Bonas also had two players redshirt this year who would not be able to be used. That left 6 available players. Only one was over 6’6” Noel Brown who played great down the stretch but was limited due to injury. No way I would play portal entrants and no way would I play with only 6 players. Manhertz subsequently notified the NCAA that Bonaventure was not available for the NIT. No offer was ever given. Does that warrant some kind of public statement?The backlash? I don’t think so. Add that the NIT has changed so that smaller schools will never have a home game and the decision was even easier. Portal period needs to be pushed back 1-3 weeks but it was the coaches who wanted this time period and fought proposals to change it. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

Notice that Fairfield’s Jalen Leach is not playing in the CBI today as he is a portal entrant. If Fairfield had made the NCAA think he would have waited to enter the portal. NCAA participants keep 75% of the credits earned while the remaining teams split the other 25%. I believe the MAAC like most conferences split it evenly. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
