Well Jesus, back in the old days teams cheated like a MF, paid players, bought their shit for them, erased bad grades, and that was college basketball. All of this just became legal now, and just like in the old days, the schools that can get the dinero from who gives a shit can assemble and bid for a player and a complete team. Basically NU is going to have to have enough to compete with like schools for players. Kind of like used cars today. Expensive.

NU needs to collect some money and give it a go or reassess if the prestige of Division I is reclassified as a unique investment and allowed to tap the endowment for $250-$300K a year so to speak.

To survive, cash is king.

If you look at all 362 teams in DI basketball probably 250 of them are not big NIL programs. For that reason Niagara will survive because it doesn't have to compete against the 100 or so schools that pay their players with NIL money. Let them go their own way with fat paychecks...we're competing against schools in the MAAC and similar conferences that will probably never generate much NIL cash. As long as Niagara can compete in the MAAC who cares what the fat cat schools are doing?

I agree with Tom on that. We should always be able to field a full team every season. GP and staff will just have to fully recruit each and every year. If GP gets fed up with it and decides to leave, NU should be able to hire a new coach without any problem(s).

Joe, it’s either that or no more Niagara basketball. Now for you and me we have Creighton & Michigan State basketball, respectively ; but for the others on this forum , all they have is Niagara hoops. So I would like to see NU basketball continue.

So you're all happy with "fielding a team"?

I'm happy with competing for a MAAC championship.

You & I have Creighton & MSU to root for, the other guys on this forum only have Niagara to cheer for. Can you understand their reasoning. It's all they have as college hoops fans. I understand your point believe me. It stinks what's going on today in this bazaar world of everything, but most of the guys on this forum are NU graduates and have nothing more to cheer for in college athletics. Who loves ya buddy ?

Read what they say Supe? This isn't how you "root" for a team. These guys that failed to deliver the goods for NU are gone. Would you have wanted all of them to have stayed? If you ask me, it's gives you another spin at the wheel.

Pay them, give them scholarships and NONE of it matters. If they want out after one year they're leaving. The only thing you are rooting for is to pick the right "new" team each year.

There are 83% more female students than male at NU. The gender diversity is 65%-35%. So since NU doesn't make any money while having to meet all of these conditions for Division 1, while having to accept 90% of the applicants which would more than likely make it to 96% if they had enough room for them all, AND AT THE END, having 65% of them female. Tell me what they would lose if they just dumped Division 1 and concentrated on education, the campus and making it grow by doing other things? NU would have a hard time competing to win championships in Division II.

It's like you and me sitting down at slot machines and announcing some kind of competition. For NU it will be difficult at ANY level. Why tilt the spending? That's a lot of money to say you run in the same division as a Duke or a Purdue.

For what Niagara should be spending their time with for their future, collecting money for students might be within the Vincentian tradition, but it's not the best way to spend money that is given to the university.

I agree that dropping hoops and turning more to higher education gives NU a boost towards the future salvation of the University; heck that's what St. Francis ,NY was actually forced into doing; but I sure would miss Niagara basketball.
