Yeah, who needs those traitorous Niagara transfers. GP will fill out the line-up just fine.

I heard Rick Pitino say that he feels Jay Wright retired due to the portal, and that every good player in the MAAC got poached. He would know.

Quinnipiac is returning 4 of 5 starters. It can be done. Just not here with this coach.

Guys
Any NIL effort at NU will fail.
They don’t have enough supporters or people who care.
This money is something they need yearly…

I suspect NU will downgrade their sports to d3 within 5 years

The chickens have finally come home to roost ! Over the decades Niagara's administrations fostered this complacency and disinterest in its' athletic programs.
It's getting what it deserves ! In the end, you get what you pay for. Where programs like Gonzaga, Creighton, Butler, St. Bona and other mid-major programs invested in basketball, Niagara just didn't care. It had its' chances to capitalize when Calvin Murphy decided to play at the school, but even then it failed to build on that fortuitous commitment. When JAM joined the program and was successful, it failed to perpetuate that success to the point where it let him leave Niagara.

You get what you put into your endeavors. Niagara has invested very little and is getting what it deserves. How could NU expect a huge NIL investment from its' supporters when it has very few of them due to the school's own complacency and failure to foster the basketball program ?

Where's all the BS about "Niagara being just fine" because it competes with similar schools of their size and stature....while losing any decent player to the Portal to be poached?

Great post SUPE.
You are right. NIL is something that, in its current form, was somewhat hard to see coming. The portal mayhem I don't think anyone saw coming.

However, you are spot on. The chickens have come home roost. Years of decline, years of not engaging in fans and media, have led to this point.

NU is know urgently soliciting people and businesses to contribute to an NIL collective. In theory this is great. But businesses are not going to give as NU players have no social media presence to fans. They are not known. They come and they go.

If individuals give to the collective that is awesome. And kudos to them. The problem is the same people are going to have to give next year, and the year after, and the year after, and the year after.

That is where all of this break down. The NIL system for schools like NU is something that can not be maintained just based on the number of people who have to be involved, yearly.

The system brought NU and their cohort of schools to their knees. Years of neglect and almost purposeful alienation will deal the final blows.

No one is coming to NU anymore because they have a D1 team in hockey and basketball. Just look at the attendance at these games. That is something that very likely was true back in the day. But it is no longer the case.

It would likely be best at this point that NU just gets out of these madness. We can cheer for a d3 team and enjoy it. The reality is ten years from now D3 sports will likely be very differnt than it is now. There will be scores of former D1 teams there.

Does anyone have even a half baked idea of how NU and other schools like it can navigate these waters successfully?

87% of Division II schools have fewer than 8000 students, and in this ridiculous environment that's where NU should be. Their success rate as a Division I school has been dismal.

I get some of the viewpoints about dropping down but at the same time but I don't think Niagara is close to considering that.

Recently, schools like Le Moyne and Mercyhurst have decided to move up to D1. Division 1 is still growing from a football and basketball standpoint at this moment in time.

There's no need yet for Niagara to consider dropping down. It might just be time to accept that the majority of MAAC schools are feeder programs now and that there's going to be "spenders" and "non-spenders" in D1. Niagara will always be at a disadvantage but that's just the way it'll going forward for many smaller programs now.

I agree, Michael...talk of dropping down to D3 is unfounded and unnecessary at this point...Niagara will survive in this new environment some way, some how.

Unnecessary?
NU draws 800 people per game. Have virtually no student interest…
Pay their coach the least in an already poor conference
Very rarely have winning seasons
And have no means to compete in today’s d1 environment.

They are closer to a d3 program than today’s d1 environment.

Maldez, you are paying these kids from donors. Every one of them. They are free agents. It's all coming from outside the university, per se. Your chance of building a program is over. The entire landscape is different. It's all about D1 = Prestige, but to seek donations for players each and every year who come and go and who are never heard about again is just not the best place to thrown dollars.....unless it's all about just saying you are D I for "prestige", and maybe a few stalwart alumni.

So have you contributed? Where do you think this is supposed to come from every year? The landscape is ruined and the model they are following is pointless because if you don't keep or draft a championship team, you will start all over again. Is that worth all of this nonsense? Some woman over at Q-Pac who is on the rowing team will mention you on social media for $50. Let's see how that goes for NU.

I came to NU in 1976 and going to the basketball games was a fairly big deal. Most of the games were at what was the NFCC and there was a fair amount of community interest and students were at least aware and interested in the team, even if they always didn't go to all of the games.
During my years at NU, the interest just dissipated. We stopped playing in the ECAC and teams committed to basketball lost interested in playing us. We were in some conference with Northeastern and Maine and our schedule was downgraded. We seemed to lose any interest from the City and there was no attempt to interest students in going to the games.
A lot of times, we didn't even know if there was a game.
There was a chance to reinvest in basketball when NU hired JAM and he guided NU to the NCAA's but as mentioned previously, no effort was made to step up and when Maher came, it seemed like even the interest to compete at the higher level of the MAAC faded.
I think NU will continue in Division 1, just bringing in a new squad as needed and, until the big 5 finally decide to break away into a true Division 1, so will most of the mid majors.
I think recruiting a roster of kids and selling them on a 4 year plan is important, but either GP isn't selling that, or kids just don't want their stay at NU to be any more than a stepping stone to a bigger program.

I’m on campus all the time. I am close with many students. There is just little interest in the university’s sport teams. There are other interests that the students have. Some schools have a society that revolves around sports. That doesn’t exist at NU. I’m sure it’s the same at many lower tier schools. UB has great apathy for sports from the student body. It is what it is. NU sports give just the right amount of publicity without the great expense.

The ice bill for the men’s hockey team would like a word on “little expense” lol

But good post. Good points!
