Went to the Alumni Golf event and took my wife to tour my old haunts at NU and Niagara Falls. I was absolutely shocked and frankly, disgusted, by the current state of the city. How did things ever get that bad? It wasn’t great in 1980, but we went downtown to bars and restaurants.
I wouldn’t let a freshman kid near NU now.
As we drove, we saw people shooting up and passed out. I have been in some real shitholes in this country and NF is right up there with the worst of them.
Every City Councilperson, Mayor, Congressman involved in NF should be held responsible for the hellhole that the Falls has become. Seriously, one of the greatest natural wonders in the world right there and they can’t figure out how to make the Falls a pleasant experience?

Luckily the school has a plan to put student apartments on Main Street!

So sad to hear...no wonder it's hard to recruit at Niagara.

It is nearly impossible to believe a parent would send their kid anywhere near the falls. And that is very sad. 20 years ago there were some bad parts you knew to stay away from and some bad bars you knew not to go to.

Today it is a complete nightmare.

The saving grace is Lewiston is closer to NU than downtown NF for students. Over the past several years there have been a lot more kids from NU in Lewiston and just not for late night fun.

I’ve said it many times, Niagara Falls isn’t a city in decline. It’s not a dying city. It is a dead city. But NU is not Niagara Falls. It is Lewiston which is lovely. The kids I teach at NU really don’t go to Niagara Falls. Why? There’s nothing there.

The city on the west side of Hyde Park itself, not so much but the Town of Niagara on Military Rd and the LaSalle section of NF have everything a college kid needs, and the school provides free transportation to all of those areas and retail centers. I can name a ton of places like Temple, U of Miami, USC, Detroit Mercy, Canisius, Fordham, Columbia, Mass Lowell, Johns Hopkins...just to name a few when you step off the campus you are immediately in a dicey area. I got more places just ask me.

John Hopkins and NU in the same sentence is kind of funny.

Niagara Falls is very dangerous and very sad. There are addicts shooting up. You pull up to a corner and see 2-3 people doing the dope fiend lean. Very sad. No police. No one cares there.

The point is that NU is not the only school that sits close to dicey areas.

My point is, the WHOLE main part of the city is absolutely disturbing and a total embarrassment. It’s not as if there’s a bad area nearby, I am talking the entire downtown area from Deveaux to Third Street.
It’s simply pathetic that a city so close to a phenomenal natural attraction can’t position itself as an attractive tourist destination.
As someone who was born there and who attended University there, I was disgusted.

force everyone to enter on university, shift them away from NF. Lewiston should be the focus.

You mean like this?
