Another offshoot of NIL? Smaller school players saying “where’s my payday”?
Two incidents close to NU’s heart. UB players and a game against Bonnies. Hell, some game featuring two low level teams had half a million bet on them!
St. Bonaventure at La Salle (Feb. 21, 2024): The fixers offered La Salle players bribe payments to underperform in the first half and allow St. Bonaventure to cover the approximate 5.5-point first-half spread. At least $247,000 in wagers were placed on the Bonnies to cover, and the bets failed with La Salle winning the first half, 36-28.
Duquesne at Fordham (Feb. 23, 2024): Duquesne was a 3.5-point favorite. Fordham reserve forward Elijah Gray and an unnamed player he recruited agreed to underperform and try not to cover the spread. Gray, who averaged 8.4 points per game that season, scored 3 points and had three turnovers in 15 minutes, but Fordham won 79-67. The fixers had bet at least $195,000, most of which was to cover the full-game spread, and lost those bets.
Buffalo at Western Michigan (Feb. 24, 2024): Buffalo starters Shawn Fulcher and Isaiah Adams, plus another unnamed teammate, agreed to try to fail to cover the first-half spread. Western Michigan was favored by 3 points and jumped to a 47-32 halftime lead. Fulcher had three turnovers and missed both shots he tried, and Adams went 2-of-7 in the first half with a turnover. The fixers placed at least $90,000 on Western Michigan to cover the first-half spread.
