In reply to: Gazette 's message, "Lay Offs At NU" on Wednesday, October 25, 03:48:09pm

You can not cut to profitability. There have already been buyouts offered from what Ive been told. The layoffs were probably a continuation of this.

The best solution to NU is to increase their yield and find students who can pay more for tuition. The problem is for years NU (And to be fair literally every other school) has been enticing students with "scholarships" for so long that its almost impossible now to convince families to pay more.

NU's issue will remain that a school with a heavy educational concentration is up against immense pressure for the SUNY system. I remember folks on here saying years ago that NU should pivot to engineering and other STEM fields.

It is an arms race. If NU draws a line in the sand others won't.

NU gives a "scholarship" for showing up to open house. Imagine if a grocery store gave you a discount for just coming to the store?

My guess is HUNDREDS of schools have had similar layoffs over the past few years. It is a system problem as much as it is an NU problem.

NU athletics certainly has had their problems and losing. Bu the school itself is generally a great place. The people who work there are generally great, hard working people.

NU, like so many other schools, finds themselves at a cross roads. The whole secondary ed space will be drastically different in the next 5-10 years.

Parents who graduated colleges between 1996 and 2002 likely have their kids entering the college hunt. So many of these parents just finished paying off their student debt less than a decade ago. From what I have read there is absolutely no motivation for these parents to saddle themselves of their kids with student debt.

On top of that everyone stopped having kids during the 2008 fin. crisis. The next cohort of students who will be looking for colleges is the smallest demographers have ever seen.

There is still hope for good places like NU. But time is quickly running out. Changes are needed and quickly! Let's hope the folks leading these schools make the right calls!

No question that times are tough for small private colleges like Niagara, (look what happened to Medaille !) but I think NU will weather the storm and survive. But as you say, changes are needed and quickly !
