Future Purple Eagles Returns To World Stage

Gothenburg, Sweden—Future

Niagara Purple Eagle Rainers Darzins will once again represent his home country of Latvia in the IIHF World Junior Championships starting on Dec. 26 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This is the third straight World Junior Championship that Darzins will represent Latvia and the fifth time he has represented his country at a world championship. In his first two World Junior Championships he has combined for 11 games with one goal as a 17-18 year old playing in an under 20 championship.

His international career started with the Latvian U16 team and Latvian U17 team in 2019-20. The following year he made the jump to U18 and scored a goal in three games at the in the World Junior 18U Championships.

This season he returned to Skellefteå AIK J20 for the second straight season, last season he played in 22 games while scoring six goals and adding three assists. This season he has appeared in 26 games while tallying three goals and four assists.

He is one of 44 current and committed NCAA Division I players to be playing in the tournament. He is the only one committed to play at an Atlantic Hockey school while a total of four NCAA players/commits playing for Latvia.

Latvia opens the tournament against the host team in Sweden on Dec. 26 before taking on Canada the following day. After a day off, Latvia plays Finland on Dec. 29 before closing group play on Dec. 30 against Germany.
