Niagara University
Niagara earned the No. 1 ranking for “Best Value” school in New York State this year from U.S. News & World Report, partly because most of its students receive some form of financial aid, but also thanks to a sharpened focus on career pathways and return on investment, Maher said.
“The one thing we have been focusing on in general is outcomes,” Maher said. “The No. 1 question I get from parents is, ‘Will my child have a good job after they graduate?’ and they don’t just mean pay. So we look at what occupations and careers are flourishing and we are linking up with partners and areas of study focused on career and life pathways.”
Niagara has worked to increase its internship and experiential learning opportunities with key business partners, so students gain confidence and mentors in their field by the time they graduate, Maher said.
Last year, Niagara partnered with Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center to offer paid internships for students to help address the health care shortage, as well as opportunities in the hospital’s food service, finance, communications and other departments.
Niagara has also created a Food Industry Center of Excellence and a Supply Chain Center of Excellence under its Holzschuh College of Business Administration that build direct pathways to employment in two of the region’s fastest-growing industries.
“We have also seen a nice bump in enrollment in our College of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism” with help from Niagara’s Sabres Scholars Program, which gives students access, mentorship and internships with from leadership of the Sabres hockey team and other regional sport and hospitality venues, Maher said.

Niagara also invested in marketing the advantages of living on its 174-acre campus, where housing includes free meals for students living in residence halls, internet, cable and laundry, among other amenities. The university has 1,247 students living on campus this fall, the highest number in a decade, Maher said.
And, Niagara hired eight former Medaille faculty to teach out two of Medaille’s key programs – its master of education and clinical mental health counseling programs – allowing 320 students to complete their degrees there.
