Subject: Y2K Watch - Day 11 - "Sitting in the Woods With a Gun"

How hairy is it gonna get? I don't think sitting in the woods with a gun is necessary. Not right off, anyway. At this point, there are 3 possibilities that concern me most:

One is the possibility of "paper freeze", where some of your paper assets are lost either temporarily, or permanently. Holding on to your bank statements and such can't be a bad idea, and remember: cash will be king, as they say, in the event of a paper meltdown. The paranoid's rule of thumb is enough cash for 3 months expenses. I don't think I know all that many people who have that much cash total, but we poorer paranoids all have to just do the best we can, so I will be guarding a small wad of mostly 10s, 5s and ones. It will spend most off the time inside a dirty gym sock. (I wonder if there will be a lot of currency floating around after Y2K that smells suspiciously like old gym socks.)

Another problem I think very likely is last minute or after the fact panic, where, for example, people perceive shortages and cause them. For this reason alone, I think it's a good idea to stock up on at least a couple months supplies of all the stuff you need. (And a lot of stuff you like--morale might be factor. I've got my Dos Equis.) And there's always the possibility that the shortages will be real.

And last but not least, terrorism. With all the militia, anti-fed groups around and the American-hating foreign groups all just itching for an opportunity to blow something up around here, I can understand why someone might think sitting in the woods with a gun might be a good idea.

I think one of the smartest tips I've heard so far on Y2K prep is to begin to monitor Australian news beginning Dec 30, as they'll hit Y2K about 24 hours before we do. You'll get an idea of what to expect, and if the shit really hits the fan there, you have a few hours to batten down. Or bug out and go sit in the woods with a gun.

The main problem I see with that, though, is that when you go out there to sit in the woods with a gun, and you come across one of the guys who's already sitting in the woods with a gun, he's probably not the type to ask you whether you're just coming to sit in the woods with your gun. He will probably eye you severely until you twitch, and then fire in your direction until his clip is empty or until yours is or both or, well, I'd stay out of the woods at least until January 2nd. GF
