Suggestion:

Go to grc.com and get your ports and shields
probed. [Sounds obscene, don't it? but I
do it fairly often. :-)]

Then go to zonelabs.com and download and install
Zone Alarm then go back to grc.com and get probed again.

I've done all this and am impressed with the results.
It was an eye-opener to me.
