Subject: The New Libertarian Sub-Culture

Here are a couple of articles I found on the Advocates for Self-Government Site (http://www.self-gov.org/) They suggest that there might well be a significant resistance to taxing, regulation and censorship of this "new libertarian sub-culture":

Internet Politics Strongly Libertarian:

A March 18th article carried by Reuters news wire service was entitled "Will A New Party Arise from the Web?" The article was by Charles Oliver. The story was subtitled: "Libertarianism Is the Politics of Wired Voters."
"[L]ook at those who now use the Internet," the article said. "Anecdotal evidence and polls show this group to be quite libertarian in its politics."

Quoted in the article was Wired magazine contributing editor John Katz: "[Internet users] don't like the idea of government regulation very much. They've got a remarkable enthusiasm for the free-market system."

Also quoted was Richard Brody, a political scientist at Stanford University: "There's definitely a strong link between the Internet culture and political libertarianism."

Wall Street Journal: The Libertarian Internet:

"[T]he Internet... is the hothouse of libertarian political activism. Silicon Valley has been a center of funding for libertarian political activism, and libertarians and computer-industry leaders have linked arms to fight government moves to censor the Web." -- Wall Street Journal, front page, June 9th.

Viva La Internet! GF
