Walk your course a day before the event. Memorize it. Go through where you will have to trot, canter, walk... PRedict where your horse will have problems. Look for bad footing. Look for steep declines. Look where it is flat so you can gallop. Go through your turns. Make notes where you will do such. Don't look down while walking it. Look up and around so you know where the jumps will pop up. Check out the jumps. How wide are they? How tall? Where is the most likely place to approach it?
