when they changed to total junk. The price of copper had risen to the point that it cost the mint almost a penny to make a penny. That wouldn't do so they changed the metal to zinc which is a lot less expensive than copper. After zinc pennies are stamped they are then flash-plated with a very thin layer of copper. The zinc pennies corrode in nothing flat and/or the copper plating wears off.

The steel looking area on your penny is the zinc where the copper plating is gone. HH Bob
