The mare's coat reflects the strange, living- wait, living or dead?- lights that flicker around the valley. She breathes deeply, her lungs filling with the stale yet wonderfully sharp air. She glances behind her to look at the small but seemingly steadily growing herd that inhabited this god-forsaken place that was, for now at least, home. She revels in the solitude that surrounds her, although at times a little company couldn't hurt. But this solitude brought about a silence that one could think clearly in, like breaking the surface of water after being submerged for too long.
