The primitives didn't engage in body modification because they thought it "looked cool." Primitive minds weren't focused on that, that is something made up by modern people to occupy space because life is so easy now.

Anyway. Tribal people would use body modification most commonly to portray social status, but also for religious beliefs & faiths. Some people (even today) will cast spells on their tattoo or piercing with certain "intent", because it is supposed to serve a certain purpose.

Example: My center lip piercing was done with a certain intent. It had certain symbolism. The pain in getting the piercing was the pain I was experiencing at the direct time of impact. The idea is that, as my piercing heals, I heal. So far, it has been working accurately. As i take care of my piercing to aid in it's healing, I have been taking care of myself accordingly to aid in the healing of my heart. Piercing for me is a reason to celebrate. It makes me happy. The other basic idea is that when/if I find someone worthy of kissing with my lip ring in, the intent is completed, & i have reason to rejoice.

That is my perspective.
