ok, i had to hunt for this one and you probably already know it!

Panthers cannot purr when inhaling because of their cartilaginous hyoid bone (attached to the vocal cord). This is the feature that allows these cats to roar. Small wild cats and domestic cats have a bony hyoid bone which allows them to purr while inhaling and exhaling, but prohibits them from roaring.

yikes! talk about trivia! er...ok, so now i know why a cat can't roar...i think! lol!
