Subject: Newly resuced Mastiff - need adice

My wife and I just adopted a stray mastiff and we need some advice.

Apparantly he was abandoned when his owners moved out of their home and left the dog behind. We think he was roaming the neighborhood for over a month.

Anyway he was trapped three days ago and given a full exam by a vet. He is healthy - weighing in at 104 lbs. Doctor thinks he is a little over 1 year old.

We picked him up from the vet two days and have been doing our best to make friends and instill trust. Lots of love given to him. We've given him the name KONA.

My question to the group is about normal behavior and characteristics. So far Kona has slept for about 22 hours a day. He barely even walks on his own to eat.

Day 1 -- spent the day giving him treats, hugs, and brushing his coat. He ate about 4 cups of Nutro - Lamb & Rice dry dog food. -- No bowel movements, No urination. Tried to walk him about 100 feet.

Day 2-- Kona finally made a good size poop and cleared his bladder. He was awake early and walked to the grassy area of our yard on his own. We fed him about 2 1/2 cups of food. and walked him a little -- about a couple hundred feet. He didn't want to walk anymore. Apparantly still hungry we gave him another 2 1/2 cups food. Then he was done. We spent the rest of the day crouching next to him giving lots of love. Tried to get him up for a walk but he wouldn't budge... so i just let him sleep. He wouldn't eat anything else this day.. Last meal around 10:30AM --

Day 3 -- Pooped and urinated early in the AM. But otherwise completely inactive. I had to worked pretty hard to force him get up a walk a bit. probably walked about 200ft on the sidewalk. He sniffed a little and actually pooped again. But so far he hasn't eaten anything today. He still just wants to lie around sleeping.

When he does walk - his gait is a little strange. Almost like he is walkng on tip toes with his hind legs. I hope he doesn't already have joint problems.

Now for questions:::

Is it normal for him to want to sleep 22+ hours a day? Is it normal for him to be so hesitant when it comes to walking? Why won't he eat more?

I hope he is healthy -- is there anything else we can be doing to help him acclimate to his new life?

Thanks for your help.

Moe and Joy
