The color was bred out. For whatever reason this happened their is NO way to ever get it back without mixbreeding. Yes there are very dark brindles but if they do not have any fawn or apricot stripes it is not to standard or is an outright mixbreed.

The standard from the 1800's calls for "...color all tanned or brindle, with a black muzzle, a dark spot over each eye, and these colors varied with white."
