Q.
A question for all you guys that are towing "big" trailerable boats.

If you were pulling a 14,000 lb. wide load (11'10"), would you go with a dually diesel, or will a standard 4x4 diesel pull this rig?

A.That's a huge load. I'd get a Diesel.

Last week I pulled a 10 thousand pound 29 ft trailer down from Morro Bay on the 101. Even with the hills I never had to downshift except for the downhill sections for speed.

My new trans temp gauge said the transmission never got over 175 degrees (night) and I made it to LA on a single tank of fuel.

Not bad for a 1990 with 345,000.

It's an old truck though.

After I dropped off the trailer I had some brake problems.

Turns out my power brake check valve(probably original) on the vacuum assist had a crack it it. Repaired it on the spot with some super glue and five minute JB weld, then drove to Kragens and bought a new one off the rack for $3.99.

Problem solved.... Man I love my truck.

My attitude is tow vehicles take a beating. Yours definately will with that kind of load.

Rather then go with the newest hottest most expensive thing I'd buy something that is known for dependability and can be easily worked on.

Those 90 vintage Dodges with 5.9 Cummins are good simple machines. You can get one with low mileage, trick it out with every tow feature known to man for under ten grand, and if properly maintained it will last as long as you want it to. Mines just the D250 the D350 would be more inline for what you want to do.

Nothing fancy just good hard working vehicles with virtually indestructable engines.

Just my take.

Tight lines, Jim
