Subject: Food Security Promotion for Milne Bay Communities
In reply to: s. 's message, "Re: Helpful Disaster & Emergency Tips for Milne Bay Province Citizens" on 16:21:47 05/29/03 Thu

Food Security issue is a traditional issue and it has been passed from one generation to another. When the management of Food Security lacked greatly, this usually led to the collapse of certain fabric social, political, cultural and family structures. The issue of Food Security is quite complex as it involves with land usage/tenure, familiy planning, climatic effects, education, beliefs, health, economic bases, movement of people (migration), moral standing and water security.
How one manages his/her family/community in the midst of above opposing or complimentary forces determines the level and sustainability of his/her food security.

Throughout the whole world, there is enough food for every person to eat and live his/her normal life. However, due to various reasons including human greed we have successfully moulded our world attitude to "live to eat" instead of "eat to live".

The United Nations has declared as guide that within the next 15-20 years from year 2000, the world community of nations should strive to reduce "poverty" by half of the current total population in poverty. "Poverty" is referred to lack of good health standard, lack of income from productive economic activities, lack of good education, social harmony and nutritious three meals a day. This equation is very much relevant to the developing countries like Papua New Guinea. Though we are not "starving" but there are a number of communities who do not have balanced 3-meals a day in Papua New Guinea.

In Milne Bay Province, due to increase in the level of soil deficiency (decrease in soil fertility) coupled with increase in population and other compounding problems, the Food Security in most remote island communities are now showing threatening signs. I could be wrong, but just have an interest to observe your own community and those that your community interact with both traditionally and in a contemporary parctices. I leave this for you to correct me.

But meanwhile, perhaps each LLG area or District (Open Electorate) should consider planning towards a possibility of staging either a LLG Agriculture Shore or coming together as a province and stage a Provincial Agricultural Show with a strategic aim to improve and sustain Food Security in the community.

Any edible food (greens, tubers, fruits etc.) should be displayed. This includes production, processing (cooking etc.)and storage of all kinds of food eaten in MIlne Bay Province. We should encourage learning and sharing of knowledge on food preparation with aim to improve quantity and quality of sources in our respective communities.

Maybe the LLGs to spheared the planting of tree crops, like bread fruit trees, coconuts, okari nuts, lemon etc for the next two years as another small but self-reliance approach towards Food Security.

The above are part of my brain storming thoughts to this page. What is your say? Please share good and positive thoughts.
