In concert, Joe has described how "Danny Boy" could be considered the best song ever written. He goes to length showing how each part of the song fits together perfectly. Also he mentions that the author is immortal but unknown. In "The Man Who Wrote Danny Boy" Joe tells of the story of someone desiring to become immortal though his music but for this the devil wants his soul. If someone could play for you a tape of Joe's comments from a Night Music tour concert, you'd have a better idea than this clumsy paraphrasing.

He also played Danny Boy on the Heaven and Hell nightclub tour. I caught him in Toronto, and Danny Boy was the one song he played from Night Music, and he went through the same explanation as you outlined in your post. One of Joe's best tunes.
