If you read the book recently you would really appreciate how close the movie really came. Like you I had read it when I was very young.. but went back and read it again shortly before the movie came out.. the script was taken right out of the book almost word for word.. The movie ended EXACTLY like the first book did.. No disapointment here.. I also love the fact that there are a bunch of things in the movie that only someone who is familiar with the books could see.. Like the fact that they all had nifty new magical elven cloaks after they left Galadriel.. cloaks that helped the hobbits hide in the woods during the urak-hai attack (until merry and pippin jumped out to distract them away from frodo) also.. if you remember Bilbo telling the story to the kids about the trolls that turn to stone.. Later in the movie the Hobbits and Aragorn are camping right in the middle of them.. Its made clear in the book but they didn't go out of their way to point it out in the movie..

I personally think that this is THE best book to movie translation ever... and if you didn't like it.. read the book then see it again.. I am certain you will change you mind.
