There are old tales that a cat can steal your breath away in the night. Thus, cats were often made sure to be shut out of the bedroom. I think this may have come about from cats sleeping on the faces of the sleeper. The warm air from mouth and nostrils in winter could seem quite appealing. Muffled by the fur, the person would fall deeper into sleep as the oxygen supply is cut down and the carbon dioxide from exhalation is being breathed back in. In short time, they suffocate.

I could be wrong on all this, of course.
