Subject: Unusual lioness - update

Some time ago I left this post about a lioness who adopted a baby beisa oryx in December last year. The oryx was killed by a male lion, but it seems that the lioness had developed a fondness for oryx and there is an amusing sequel to this story.

After the first baby oryx was killed on 6 January, the lioness, nicknamed Larsens (or Kamuniak – meaning “blessed one”) adopted another baby oryx on St. Valentines day. The calf did not appear to thrive on lions milk, and Samburu Game Reserve wardens removed the calf on 16th February for fear it might die of hunger.

On 28 March Larsens adopted a third baby oryx, about four or five days old. Closely watched by wardens, the lioness showed she still had her natural instincts when on 1st April she hunted and killed an eranuk – a type of gazelle. After her meal she returned to her adopted oryx as if nothing had happened. The next day the oryx’s real mother tried to reclaim her offspring, but the lioness chased her away.

No-one knows what happened to the third baby oryx, but somehow Larsens lost it.

In May, Larsens tried to adopt a fourth oryx, but it ran back to it’s mother. According to a game warden “This calf was two weeks old, unlike the previous three that were only days old”. Shortly after that Larsens escaped from the surveilance of the game wardens, and had not been seen for two days.
