Hendrik,

That's a great post and I agree with you regarding Yogananda and his "top" disciples. For those of us who've come to Yogananda's teachings, kriya yoga practice through SRF, it is very difficult to access just what is the truth.

The Yogananda that is presented by the SRF of today is a God-Man. One who spokes in profundities constantly, who never had a human desire, who was an Avatara. This view has been solidifying for many years, and to question any of that is anathema, blasphemy, not for a devotee to even consider. I have increasingly for the last few years found this campaign by SRF to be alarming, being around long enough to remember when they didn't do this type of thing. Yet today we find it almost impossible to discuss the real Yogananda, whom I dare say, none of us posters had the blessing to meet in his lifetime. So we are left with the choice of accepting SRF's view as gospel, based upon the veracity of those who run the place, or we seek out other avenues of research, hoping for a more true, balanced perspective of this very unique person.

Those disciples that you mentioned all stood by him during his trying times associated with Mr. Nerode's father, Dhirananda troubles etc. Consider for a moment the problem even being associated with this East Indian mystic had for Mr. Lynn. He had to keep the business Mr. Lynn front and center to please the various Boards of Directors of his many concerns; not to mention his wife who apparently deeply disliked YOganana, to the point that Mr. Bob Raymer (direct disciple of P.Y.'s) wasn't even allowed into Lynn's mansion in Kansas City to meditate, they had to do that outside!

Or Ma Durga. I've met her and I can tell you that she wasn't anyone's fool! She was also someone who was previously married, not a "starry-eyed" teenager from Utah. She shouldered on with Yogananda when all this stuff hit the fan. Gyanamata, too, had been married, a very cultured lady, the wife of a University professor, she too stood with her guru. Dr. Lewis, while financing Yogananda's early ministry, he also kept close to PY when he was attacked, and as you've pointed out was repaid eternally (as they all were/are). My point, like yours, is watch the highest one's, did they cut and run afraid of their reputations?

My belief is that Yoganandaji was a fully liberated Master. He was also a human being who had some of the same concerns we all do who find ourselves here. Ma Durga's book reveals more of the real Yogananda. Yet to me this isn't a diminishment of him, rather it shows that when one if Self-realized he doesn't become otherwordly, unable to function in this world. Rather, as his life showed, one's becomes fully alive, joyous, filled with love, able to endure.
